In this assignment you'll be reading an article that was published in CBS news on the net, of a boy who claims homework is unnecessary.
Ben Berrafato is an 11 year old boy from N.Y. who believes children can do without homework and school work should be restricted to the classroom and not done at home as well.
Please read the following article and comment on this issue: Is homework really a necessary component of learning? Can students learn better without having to prepare homework every day? If so, how?
The Case Against Homework
CBS Evening News: Fifth Grader Issues Manifesto Against Taking Schoolwork Home
CORAM, N.Y., Feb. 20, 2009 | by Steve Hartman

Even though he's just a fifth grader, 11-year-old Ben Berrafato is challenging - seriously challenging - one of this country's most enduring and widely held beliefs: The belief that kids need homework.
"Where has it been proven, in these many centuries of this work, that it has been good for anyone?" Ben said. Ben's crusade against homework began with a simple assignment, CBS News correspondent Steve Hartman reports. For English class at New Lane Elementary in Selden, N.Y., Ben had to write about something he was passionate about and since Ben hates homework he wrote about that. And he did so quite creatively.
Part of his essay reads: "Homework is assigned to students like me without our permission. Thus, homework is slavery. Slavery was abolished with the passing of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. So every school in America has been illegally run for the past 143 years." On a whim, Ben sent a copy of his essay to the New York Daily News. "And I got like this humongous section of the op-ed page," he said.
It then circulated on the Internet, Ben started doing talk shows, and a monster was born.
"School should stay at school," he said. "When it is brought home in a backpack, it causes problems."
For teachers and school administrators, Ben's whole argument borders on blasphemy. Certainly most would dismiss it as wishful propaganda - if not for the simple fact that the kid may be right.

"He's really onto something here," said Nancy Kalish, who co-authored a book called "The Case Against Homework." "As he pointed out, there is almost zero connection, correlation between homework and any type of achievement in elementary school," Kalish said. In researching his essay, Kalish says Ben really did his homework, so to speak, citing the very latest studies. "Kids who do 60 to 90 minutes of homework in middle school and over two hours in high school actually do worse than average in standardized tests," his essay read.
How far is Ben going to take it? "As far as I can," he said. "As far as possible."

"I have a petition and I'm going to try and get a law abolishing homework," he said.
Ben plans to send the signatures to Congress.
He says just about everybody's been supportive. Except ….. his principal. "You know, a famous historian once said, 'I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death you're right to say it,'" the principal said. "You know who that was? I believe it was Patrick Henry. I could be wrong. I learned that a long time ago in homework and I've forgotten it."
Ben says she just proved his point right there. "If you're going to do homework then forget what it is, then why even do it?" Ben asked. Of course, now he's probably got homework and detention.

"It's an interesting thought," the principal said. Not that it would deter him anyway. To paraphrase what Patrick Henry actually said: Give me liberty from homework or give him … extra credit, at least.
i think that BEN has a point.Teachers are too busy giving H.M.,chacking them and get aggrevated when pupils dont do it.Sometimes,it is better to finish work and ex.at school, check and be sure it has been done.

השבמחקIn fact there's a point in Ben's point of view
השבמחקIf we as teachers could have time to do everything during the class lesson,it could be a great thing because we would have more time for practicing and working with weaker pupils
I think that homework is useful and kids need to repeat the material that they learned in the class.Going back to the lesson help memorize and understand the learning material and teach them to learn independently and create imaginaition .

השבמחקIndeed, it may be tempting to show symphathy and agree that students' lives are difficult as they are without homework. However, many students - as well as adults - need practice at least for reviweing. Therefore, homework should be given not as a punish but as a means of aid.
Although I am an English teacher and a certainly know that ;"Practice makes perfect" BUT I am still on the side of the poor students. |
השבמחקIt is so difficult to come home after the whole day studies at school and even think of doing HW.
May be it's better and more useful to do as many exercises at school as possible and not to return to them once more at home
No matter what part of the world they come from, they all have the same basic need- to get rid of homework. Almost every student believes that homework must vanish and not exist in their daily lives. These pupils do have a valid point there: however, I tend to agree only to a certain extend. Homework should not abolished. We live in an era where technology rules our life so why not find a challenging and encouraging way to assign homework? Our duty as teachers is to cope up with the world of technology. Sending students to blogs, sites and internet can be the key to generating enthusiasm when performing a certain task at home!

I think that homework is really a necessary component of learning. Pupils need a review of the material that they learn in class.
השבמחקTeachers must think about different ways to review the metaril, pupils need the variety!

I disagree with Ben. Although it's annoying todo homework, i think it's necessary for some pupils. Practice at home is very important and often what is done in school isn't enough.
השבמחקThe name of my blog is RevivimEnglsih
On the one hand as a teacher I can't agree with the boy. Especially speaking about first steps learning. Homework is a very important level in elementary school. On the other hand, I didn't do homework either when I was a student. If a person feels he understands and remembers the material taught in class, why should he revise it again?
השבמחקHi everyone. I think that giving homework should be carfully considered by us teachers. Don't give homework unless they have a pre-determined purpose that can serve the students at home.

I tend to disagree with Ben Berrafato's claim that students can learn better without having to prepare homework every day.
השבמחקI think homework is a really necessary component of learning. It expands our horizons and strengthens our learning abilities. In my opnion, homework magnifies our sekf discipline and thus grants us more freedom (making us much stronger and wiser

Hi, everyone!
השבמחקIn my opinion, homework isn't slavery. It's a good opportunity ti learn more and to train ourselves.
Learning process includes some steps that have to be followed. First of all we need to understand new material and after that to train it (especially speaking English).
Unfortunatly we don't have enough time to do it in our classroom, so we have to train it again and again in order to create new paths in our brain.
Have a nice day, Tatiana

hi
השבמחקi think that doing homework can not be apart of learning and studying.
via homework pupils can practice and raise their confidence or know where they need more explenations

I think(Irene) that homework is essential for reviewing class material. In addition I belive that homework contribute to children's responsibility and helps them to become independent learners.
I (Dana) partially agree with the young scholer. As he claims H.W may not be necessary for reviewing the material; however, by doing his H.W the child learns much more than the material itself, but rather how to handle responsibilitys and accomplish tasks and duties that each one of us has on a daily basis....
My name is Victoria Brook. I've read the article and I partially agree with the boy. From the one side all of us want to come back home without any homework, as adults as kids. But from the other side I think that it is less actual Israeli system of education, because:
השבמחק1) We have too many pupils in each class (especially for English class), that's why it is very difficult to give a special attention to each pupil and to move quickly in teaching the material with wishable results from the pupils' side.
2) We haven't got enough hours for teaching English at school in order not to give homework and to do all the work in class.
3) All our classes are heterogeneous, that's why some pupils do as classwork as homework during the class and come back home without any homework. But there are also pupils with different difficulties; they have to work hard in order to succeed. These pupils usually come back home with homework and feel upset.
I think that in order not to give homework, we first of all have to make changes in our system of education.
